Longsight Bowling Club Updates

Social Members Group

Our 2025 open day was a great success, attracting several new members – some of whom quickly joined our league teams.

Our social bowlers are also thriving, meeting regularly through a WhatsApp group for friendly games and practice sessions throughout the week.

Following last year’s success, we’ll be hosting another open day early in the new season and would love to welcome even more new members to the club.

Bolton Cares Team

In 2025, for the second year running, we welcomed the Bolton Cares team and the people they support to the club. During the season, their group visits each week for an hour of bowling, which they greatly enjoy. We look forward to welcoming them back again in the 2026 season.

About Longsight Bowling Club

Situated just off Longsight (B6196), Longsight Bowling Club is in the heart of the Harwood local community.

The club has been established since 1922 and currently competes in 4 different Bolton bowling leagues offering options for all ages and genders, social and competitive bowlers.

Brief History

Founded on June 17th 1922 and originally named the Harwood Wesleyan Bowling Green, Longsight Bowling Club recently celebrated a landmark centenary year which was marked by a visit from local councillors and a one-off tournament.

Where Longsight Bowling Green currently stands was formerly a brickworks home to kilns used for firing bricks.

The first ever game of crown green bowls played on the green was by H.E. Shuttleworth and J. Scholes – both of whom were instrumental in creating the green.

Over 100 years on from that first game the green is now a local hub of the Harwood community.

Recent History

In recent years Longsight Bowling Club has been a hive of activity with improvements being made both on and off the field.

The club took charge of maintaining the green in 2021 (previously done by Bolton Council) which enabled the committee to reduce permit fees each member is required to pay.

These savings also allowed the club to invest in additional, necessary equipment and the green is now showing significant improvements on the playing area.

These improvements will hopefully attract more members of the local community to come to play and sign up to become fully fledged members.
